National Canvas Security Incident

Isle of Wight County Schools has been made aware of a national security incident involving Canvas, an online learning platform provided by Instructure. Canvas is used by many school divisions, colleges, and universities across the country.

This incident occurred within Canvas/Instructure systems. It was not the result of a breach of IWCS systems or the IWCS network.

According to information provided by Instructure, unauthorized activity was identified and contained. Canvas was temporarily placed in maintenance mode as a precaution and has since been restored. Instructure has also stated that it has found no evidence that account credentials for IWCS users were obtained or that additional data was removed.

At this time, IWCS has not been provided with information indicating which specific individuals, if any, may have been impacted. Instructure is continuing to investigate and is expected to notify any impacted individuals directly, if notification is required.

In addition, Renaissance has temporarily disabled its Canvas integration out of an abundance of caution. Students and staff may still access Renaissance products through IWCS-approved login methods outside of Canvas.

IWCS takes the privacy and security of student and staff information seriously. We will continue to monitor updates from Canvas/Instructure and will share additional information with families if it becomes necessary.

Thank you for your understanding.
