From the Desk of Mr. Brennan…
Not sure if you’ve noticed, but the kids have been very focused on my facial hair lately. Whether in the hallways, classrooms, cafeteria, or outside, I have been made aware of some very opinionated Cardinals, shouting their wishes for my whiskers. I've been advised to shave so I don't get crumbs caught in my beard. I've also been told to save my beard so people will recognize me. And so I'll look like Santa -- which really wasn't the look I was going for... • In my years as an educator, I've experienced many a mock election (remember Ross Perot?) and unfortunately the more recent ones have been a little too heated for my liking – basically, we’ve had the schoolyard versions of the vitriol and animosity modeled by the adults who run for office, who push their agenda, who spew from the screens. When two of the talking points at September’s presidential debate were the eating habits of immigrants and the sizes of political rallies, we might be witnessing a descent from decent discourse. • This election cycle, we're not going to entertain that opportunity for enmity; instead, the Cardinals will get to vote on something much less controversial than gun control, reproductive rights, opening borders or building walls. We want to give our students an opportunity to exercise the democratic concept of voting so come Election Day, each student will have a chance to register his or her opinion by voting for me to SHAVE IT or SAVE IT. Some will be excited that they “won;” some will experience what they view as loss -- what a great opportunity for you to bolster their understanding that it is the democratic process that is important. What’s essential is knowing what you're voting for or voting against; taking the time to cast the ballot; and accepting the results with dignity. These are vital lessons in citizenship, and we adults will be teaching a lot by how we comport ourselves in this final, stressful lead-up to November 5 and in the season after as some of us win, some of us lose, and someone becomes our next president. • Enjoy the conversation when you see your children come home with “I Voted!” stickers Tuesday and when the result is revealed Wednesday: Elections have consequences, so either I will remain bewhiskered or I will become as baby-faced as a man of a certain age can be.
Let’s grow!

Caregivers of 2nd graders: Throughout November, all IWCS second graders will participate in division-wide screening for the Gifted Education Program through the use of a standardized test (Cognitive Abilities Test--CogAT). The screening assessment will only be given in person. Once students have completed the assessment, we will reach out to parents of students scoring in the 89th percentile or above with a letter requesting permission for your child to continue in the identification process. More information on the gifted program for Isle of Wight County Schools can be found on the division’s website under Departments: Instruction.
Here are a few suggestions for ensuring your child’s best performance:
- Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep each night during testing
- Have your child eat a healthy breakfast at home or at school in the morning
- Encourage them to do their best
Please contact our Gifted Resource Teacher, Mrs. C. Delong ([email protected]) if you have questions about the administration of the test, the identification process, or the IWCS gifted program.
The SMS Junior Beta Club is conducting a shoe drive fundraiser through November 22. Anyone can help by donating gently worn, used, or new shoes to the main office at Smithfield Middle School. SMS Jr. Beta will earn funds based on the total weight of the shoes collected through Funds2Orgs. All donated shoes will then be redistributed throughout the Funds2Orgs network of small business partners. Funds2Orgs works with micro-entrepreneurs in developing countries to help them create, maintain, and grow small businesses through sales of the shoes collected in the shoe drive. From the Desk of Mr. Brennan…
Just in case you’re not completely over hearing the news about this week’s big election (the beard one, not the presidential one), there’s a link below to our student-reporting “Morning Tweet” from this past Wednesday. Enjoy watching what your children saw and continue to discuss the concepts of elections and majority rule with them. One Cardinal is already looking forward to our next in-house exercise in democracy and suggested that next time I shave my legs, but I’m afraid that there would absolutely be some election tampering if that was on the ballot!
Decision 2024: Carrollton Cardinal Edition!
Correction: It wasn’t 67% of the Cardinals that voted “Shave It!” but 62.3% of our little electorate – still, a pretty resounding mandate.
Let’s grow!

From the Desk of Mr. Brennan…
A few weeks ago, I focused on Here, the first word of this year’s theme Here We Grow; then a few weeks later, I wrote about the concept of We. As we now see the first quarter of this school year in our rearview mirror, it’s time to ponder Grow. • I don’t know of many other careers aside from agriculture in which growth is a primary focus and so easy to track. Already we’ve seen a great deal of growth with kindergarteners who quickly figured out what this whole school-thing is all about and now walk in with confidence. We have observed wonderful growth in students who struggled last year with controlling negative behaviors and are now feeling positive and productive. Our teachers have demonstrated real professional progress as they have been tackling our new language arts curriculum and have begun growing more comfortable -- growing to love the state-mandated curriculum change may come with time. • At Carrollton, we are able to see growth beyond simply the physical. We see students grow as critical thinkers and peer-collaborators and clear communicators. We see little people grow as confident leaders and upstanding citizens. Our Cardinals grow in their ability to spell, add, write, subtract, comprehend scientific concepts, understand important history; they develop as appreciators of fine arts and tinkerers in aerodynamics and oceaneering and robotics. • As a school, we have a strategic plan that is fueled by the belief that children and families and staff can and should be challenged and allowed to grow, and, of course, we realize that growth takes time and can be messy and maybe even a bit uncomfortable. But this is what we do – and this is what you responsible parents do: together, we give your kids good soil; we make sure they’re nourished; we remove that which saps progress; and we watch them blossom!
Let’s grow!

your weekly update from Carrollton Elementary
11/23/2024
From the Desk of Mr. Brennan…
I hope you’re feeling a sense of calm as we begin to ease into next week. I know that I am – but I’m not the one orchestrating Thursday’s Big Meal. Like Charlie Brown, I can’t cook a Thanksgiving meal; all I can make is cold cereal and maybe toast. Even if you’re the head chef and host of the season’s festivities, I hope that you’ll make time to focus on what brings you joy and what makes you grateful. • It’s been said that comparison is the thief of joy, and, man, can we easily fall into the trap of comparing our lives to those perfectly posed Pinterest postings; a collection of decorating ideas can turn into fodder for discontent if you don’t actively protect your joy. I often encourage my daughters to not compare their lives and lots with anyone else’s since they can’t always know what’s actually behind the curated social media posts. When we fall into the trap of comparing what we have to what they have, we can easily begin to feel discounted or, even worse, entitled which diminishes the reason to feel thankful for anything because we feel we deserve everything. I recently discovered an adage that’s popular with athletes and coaches and teams: “Grateful for everything. Entitled to nothing.” I will be ruminating on that quote through the next week – and hopefully longer. • It was American clergyman and author Norman Vincent Peale who observed, “The more you practice the art of thankfulness, the more you have to be thankful for” and this parallels nicely with the notion of not needing more stuff or better stuff or their stuff in order to be grateful. Practicing the art of thankfulness takes effort and desire – which may be why so many tend to be entitled and discontent. On the spectrum of positivity, I can tend to be more Eeyore than Elmo, so I have to make a conscience effort to focus on thankfulness. Demonstrating thankfulness doesn’t mean I ignore the hard aspects of life: it simply means being practical and putting those less-than-ideal situations in perspective while noticing all of the many, many good things that co-exist with the bad. • Though I’ve been sick for the past week, I’m grateful for my health. Though I live with four very loud daughters, I’m grateful for my family. Though I’d rather be independently wealthy and living on an island, I’m grateful for my job. Though it feels like a money pit at times, I’m grateful for my home. When I think of what makes me thankful, I think of those trials that taught me valuable lessons, and I consider the trials that I haven’t had to endure. To practice thankfulness this year, I'll ponder the blessings of my wife, my church, our Cardinals community – and that includes you.
Happy Thanksgiving!

From Lynn Briggs, IWCS Director of Community and Media Relations:
Isle of Wight County Schools is currently participating in the federal government's Impact Aid Program. Impact Aid is a federal grant program designed to help pay for the education of federally connected children. The amount of funding is based on the number of IWCS students whose parents are connected with the federal government. To determine if our school system is eligible for funding, each school will need to conduct a survey. The information from these surveys will be used to support our request for Impact Aid funds. The forms are being sent home with each student's report card. A copy of the form is also attached to this e-mail. All information that you provide on the Impact Aid Program Survey Form will be treated confidentially.
Please return the signed form to your child’s school by December 9, 2024.
Thank you for your assistance with ensuring we have proper documentation for our Impact Aid application.
