CAES Weekly Updates: December 2020

CAES Weekly Update      December 18, 2020

Merry Everything! Happy Always! These words were on third grader Dean’s shirt yesterday and I love the sentiment. The building has gotten quieter over the last few hours as staff members wrap up in their rooms, exchange holiday wishes, and head out for winter break. They’re leaving weighed down by thoughtful gifts from generous families and by the thought of our remote return. With only a day to work together on making the pivot from in-person to virtual instruction, our hybrid teachers are undoubtedly focused on what January 4 will look like. I hope they will spend time on what December 25 will look like and focus on their families, their health, their breathing, their need for calm. And I hope you will, too. May these next two weeks be merry as you celebrate and reflect, and may we all enter 2021 hopeful and wiser. So, as your kids begin their winter break and we settle in for a month-long pause from in-person school, realize that you can do this because you’ve done so much over the past fifty weeks. None of us knew what 2020 would be like this time last year, but, look: we’ve almost survived it!

CAES Weekly Update      December 12, 2020

Sharing is caring. Unless you’re sharing germs: then it’s a pandemic. Nurse Stalls and I have been chatting several times a day for the past weeks to make sure that we are doing what is necessary to keep our Cardinals healthy, and most of our discussions have revolved around quarantines. I truly appreciate it those parents who are taking their responsibility seriously and keeping their children home if they exhibit COVID-live symptoms or are exposed to someone who has tested positive. When you self-quarantine, it drastically decreases the likelihood of the virus being introduced at school. Please reiterate with your children the importance of keeping their masks on when at school and keep sticking with the health mitigation strategies that we’ve had in place since September. We only have four more days with the kids before our winter break, and as we all know, in 2020 anything could happen in that brief time!

Health Update

Please let me know if you are planning to travel internationally at any point during the school year. After you travel, your children who are IWCS students will need to adhere to the following CDC guidelines:

·       The student should be tested 3–5 days after the international trip and stay home for 7 days after travel.

o   Even if the test is negative, the student should stay home for the full 7 days.

·       If the test is positive, the student should be quarantined for 10 days to protect others from getting infected.

·       If the student doesn't get tested, he/she may not return to school for 14 days after travel.

Twelve Cardinals were quarantined this week due to presenting COVID-like symptoms or being related to someone who has presented symptoms or being in contact with a COVID-positive non-CAES person; this includes three sets of siblings. Since September, 72 Cardinals have been quarantined for these reasons. So far this year, we have had only one confirmed case of COVID-19 for any in-person Cardinal and one for a virtual Cardinal. Please keep maintaining at least one reindeer’s distance from others!

CAES Weekly Update      December 5, 2020

Tradition is the illusion of permanence. [Woody Allen] When my wife and I said “I do” twenty years ago, we blended family traditions and began to establish our own. Our daughters are now the beneficiaries of the predictability and comfort that can come from doing things we’ve “always” done. Then 2020 happened and we’ve had to tweak some of our customs and break some holiday habits. The most recent ritual to fall victim to the pandemic was pictures with Santa. Starting sixteen years ago when we handed our first daughter to St. Nick, we’ve assembled our growing brood around the jolly elf every Thanksgiving weekend – the past thirteen years right here in Smithfield at the Christmas Store. As if socially distancing wouldn’t have made it hard enough to sit on Santa’s lap, our Mr. Claus went to that big sleigh in the sky… (hard news to hear and share). So, we punted: This December, our traditional picture has Molly, Annie, Lillian, and Eden Jane huddled around the Benjamin Franklin statue in front of the Smithfield Times -- this photograph will be a good reminder that traditions can be flexible, family is fundamental, and 2020 was anything but predictable.

Fun Way to Support the United Way

This Wednesday and Thursday are Jersey Days - Please help our team raise the most money for the 2020 United Way campaign! Students may wear their favorite team's jersey/shirt to school for a $1 donation.
